Make a Handy Box out of a Gallon Plastic Container

Hi Everyone and Happy New Year!!

Here is a cool project which uses a gallon container (milk, water etc..) to make a very handy closable container. Here is a picture of mine, now decorated,  from the video.

I keep all of my daily stuff (wallet, knife, keys, lighter, flashlight etc..) in it for easy organization (Jill, my wife, loves it)

Use Newspaper to Clean Windows!

Hi Everyone!

This is a neat money saving trick! I had actually forgotten about this myself for years.

At a point in my youth, I was riding around some city with my mom (I think it was San Antonio, TX) when we pulled up to a busy intersection and this guy almost jumped on our hood and started cleaning the windshield glass! It was interesting to me that he was using newspaper to clean the glass instead of a cloth or paper towel and it was working very well! Anyhow, after a few dollars exchanged we were on our way.

After a while, I asked my mom about this and she said using newspaper to clean glass works great! When she was younger that is how they always did it!

Here is my short demo:

As it turns out, the newspaper is actually very lightly abrasive and therefore cleans windows extremely well. You can use regular window cleaning solution (the blue stuff) of even make your own with a mixture of water and vinegar..

Free newspaper is everywhere, look for weekly publications and stock up! It can be used for an amazing number of things (see resources section below).

Using LED Christmas Lighting for Night Lights

Hi Everyone!

This is a quick video of how I have used LED string lights for the purpose of night lighting at the house.

I have three dogs and a young daughter which tend to leave little surprises for me when I prance around through the night. I have cussed at many a stray toy or bone! I also hate being half asleep and going to the bathroom to be completely blinded by the several hundred watts of normal bathroom lighting!

Anyhow ’tis’ the season for holiday lighting to start showing up. The new cool thing has been battery powered strings and even solar powered strings. These free you from the plug and also make them invaluable in a power outage. This video shows you how I have used both (for over a year now) to avoid those late night problems!

Please note. I did not include any footage of the lights operating at night because it did not represent what the human eye sees very well. These lights are impressive.

Interested in the battery charging system I have?  It has saved us soooo much money.

And the Batteries –> Tenergy Batteries

Cheers!

Mix Your Own No Rinse Disinfectant Spray!

Hi Everyone!

Sorry it has been a while, life has sent me a few ‘curve balls’ in the last couple of months :)! I hope this post makes up for my absence.

In this video I show you how to make your own “no rinse disinfectant spray” (or sterilizing spray) for about 2% of the price of the store bought version and it works exactly the same!

I estimate this has saved my family about $50 in the last five months.

A few of the key points:

1) Either use an non see-through spray bottle or store the bottle in a dark place when not in use, it will last longer.

2) This dilution is using the ‘concentrated’ bleach. I chose to do this as I can no longer even find regular strength.

3) Make sure you let the solution sit on the surface for at least two minutes before wiping dry so chemistry can do its thing.

4) Remember no rinse is needed

Make more solution when the very faint smell of bleach can no longer be detected.

Resources:

The dilution used in the video was 1 Tsp of concentrated bleach per 24 ounces of water.

So If you want to make a Gallon of solution then 5 Tsp of concentrated would be sufficient.

The Top 5 Most Commonly Made Mistakes of Food Storage

Hi Everyone!

I am very pleased to share this guest post from Dirk Puckett of DailyBread.com. Thanks so much Dirk,  and congrats on your sponsorship of the Denver Self Reliance Expo!

Enjoy!

Willie

Top 5 Most Commonly Made Mistakes of Food Storage

We all want to be prepared for a rainy day, but when we are preparing, how do we really know if we have what we’ll need? We’ve put together a list of the top 5 most commonly made mistakes people make when putting together a food storage to help you out with that question.

  1.        Lack of Variety. Many people bulk up on canned food items and forget about water, wheat, and other staples of daily life. Remember that in order to survive, you are going to need every food group. This includes vitamins and minerals. Since the food your family will be eating won’t be fresh, it won’t be as nutrient-dense and you may need extra vitamins, especially if you have children.
  2.        The Quick Fix. Most people forget that in a dire situation they may be injured and unable to function like they usually would. For circumstances like this, you will need a quick source of food that takes little to no prep work at all. Freeze-dried food or a packaged protein bar is a good example of this. If your legs are both broken, or you have 1 minute to grab something before you run out of a burning building, you won’t be able to eat much of anything else.
  3.        1 Step at a Time. Do not make the mistake of buying a huge load of wheat this month, then a huge load of beans next month, and a huge load of something else the next. Buying in bulk one item at a time does not prepare you very well if the emergencies were to happen tomorrow, and all you have is 300 pounds of wheat. Start off with covering all the essentials, and then slowly build up to having bulk amounts, instead of the reverse.
  4.        Buy it, Use it. Something that is important to remember is to cook from and regularly use your food storage. It must be constantly replenished it anyway, so you might as well not waste your money by simply throwing it away. It will also better prepare you for a dire situation because you will not only have the resources, but know what to do with them!
  5.        Keep the Containers! It is incredibly important to keep everything you store in plastic or metal containers. If it is kept in paper or plastic bags, it can be exposed to moisture, bugs, or other things that can cause it to go bad. When you buy in bulk that is an awful-lot of money and food to be wasted just because you didn’t put it in a container.

Remember these simple tips and you are well on your way to becoming an expert on food storage! For more information on food storage and tips for how to improve yours, click the link.

A Better Way to Destroy Confidential Information and Protect Your Identity

Hi Everyone!

In this video I am pleased to share with you a review of a very cool product called the PAPERMASHER.

I received a comment on one of my videos about making newspaper fire logs from a nice guy named Daniel. He told me about the PAPERMASHER product and said it might be a good input to the process of making fire logs.

I asked him if he would be willing to send me a set and let me do a demo,, and……

A VERY short time later I received a package in the mail and there they were!

What you get:

  • Two (2) PAPERMASHER  bags
  • Instructions

Summary of the review? Awesome results!! There is no chance anyone is going to make heads or tails of what was processed.

As an added bonus, these do make a perfect input to the fire log press. Or chunk the pieces up and you have beautiful fire starters for next to nothing.

I’ll let the video speak for itself, bottom line is thumbs up!

Pressure Canning Unusual Foods For Science Fair!

Hi All!

This is a film of my daughter (all of this is her idea, for her school science project) pressure canning her favorite foods at the age of 8. Pretty cool stuff! I learned a lot also.

I think this is another lesson on how versatile pressure canning really is, not everything may be perfect, but it works very well.

I’m especially impressed (and will do more) with the bacon and beef. They both worked like a charm and did taste great.

Cheers!

Willie
